LET GOD BE YOUR BUILDER

PSALM 127:1-2

Life without God is meaningless. It is like a dead lion that can no longer impose his dominance over his prey and is no longer better than a live dog, Proverbs 9:4. Watch out! Where and whom are you building your life? That should concern you because that is where your life solidity lies. A shallow foundation might not stand the test of time while a firm foundation will surely hold its ground even when the earth is shaking. The writer of this psalm acknowledges the importance of building on the right foundation. He found out that all of life’s work would be of nothing without God as a foundation. He wrote that “Unless the Lord builds a house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.” This house can be referred to; as your family, your job, and or your own life. Without the blessing of God and when He is disregarded in all your plans, all your efforts would be futile and will not succeed. When establishing a career, a family or anything in life, you should have God as the starting point. In the same manner, a city and a well-guarded place aren’t safe and secured without God who oversees it. Even a thousand and ten thousand soldiers could do nothing against a one true God.

Still, working too much to the exclusion of rest and to the point of neglecting our God-given responsibilities and families does not reflect the kind of conviction that God is expecting from you. It shows your lack of trust in His capability to deliver your needs. No wonder that even if you keep on toiling that much, you still lack many things and you realized that even what you have produced is not enough to sustain yours and your family needs. The writer puts it this way, “In vain you rise early and stay up late toiling for food to eat.” God is not against hard work but rather honors it. Consequently, we should be careful to uphold a balance between working while trusting and resting while trusting Him. You must acknowledge the fact that even though you work with all your heart and might, you can never be truly satisfied unless the Lord grant what you need. There are so many things in life that only God can tender which no amount of money or a stable job could give. One thing is for sure, “the Lord grants sleep to those He loves.”

“Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who walk in His ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor, blessings and prosperity will be yours, Proverbs 128:1-2.”
